The effects of the Tōhoku tsunami were horrific. The duration lasted for 6 minutes and traveled up to 10km inland to the Sendai area. The tsunami waves reached up to 8 metres high. This caused extreme flooding, landslides and fires. Damaged building and infrastructure include airports, ports, hospitals and historic structures and water and dam problems. There were also nuclear incidents which caused radiation releases, which was recorded to be a level 7 major nuclear accident. This caused a huge problem for residents in the area as they were exposed to large amounts of radiation and chemicals.
After the earthquake and tsunami, Japan experienced over 1000 aftershocks, with around 80 which were recorded to have a magnitude of 6.0 and 7.0. As of March 2012, the aftershocks still continued with a magnitude of 4.0. Minor tsunamis also occurred during the end of 2012.
Due to the horrible effects of the Tsunami, many people suffered the lack of food water shelter and decreased health. There was a high death toll, with around 20,000 deaths, 6,152 people injured and 2,562 people recorded missing. This occurred during a school day, so unfortunately many children are now orphans.
